Today at the National Prayer Breakfast, Dr. Benjamin Carson, a pediatric neurosurgeon at John Hopkins Medical Center, told President Barack Obama that Obamacare is not the answer.
To his face. And Barry had to sit there and take it with a smile.
Carson advocated that instead of nationalizing health care with a giant bureaucracy that will eventually tell us what kind of care we have, when we have it and if we will just be sustained or cured of something, that we should provide every citizen with a Health Savings Account.
“We have spent a lot of money on health care,” Carson said, “twice as much per capita as anyone else in the world, and yet not very efficient.”
Instead he proposed that we take all the money earmarked for health care in the federal budget, including that for the bureaucrats and place it in a Health Savings Account when a child is born. Each year money would be deposited in the account and could be used for any health care issue that arises. The HSA would follow the person their entire life and they would have control of the funds – allowing for the shopping for the best price in services and the type of service a person would desire.
Carson even suggested that someone at the end of their life facing multiple diseases could also decide to pass on their HSA to a family member for further use.
And he didn’t forget the homeless and desperate – because this program would not be tied to a job or residence, those people would still have their coverage no matter what.
This would be a great way to ensure people are getting the health care they need, allow for competition among health care providers and through that competition lower health care service rates.
That won’t happen with Obamacare since no competition leads to whatever price and service the bureaucracy decides. We know that. Obama knows that and Dr. Carson knows that.
Hopefully some of our elected representatives who have pledged to overturn Obamacare will consider Carson’s suggested plan. Anything would be better than the socialized medicine coming our way.
